Income Tax Assistance

FROM, through a partnership with United Way and the IRS, offers income tax assistance each year through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Kent County residents who meet the income guidelines can schedule an appointment to have their taxes e-filled for free by IRS trained volunteers at FROM’s Main Office.

Who Can use Income Tax Assistance at FROM?

This program is open to individuals and families who live in Kent County and meet the income guidelines. In 2021, the income guideline is an annual household income less than $67,000.

How to Schedule an Appointment:

Income Tax Assistance appointments can be made after January 20, 2021 by calling United Way’s 2-1-1 phone line. Either dial 2-1-1 on your phone or call 1-800-887-1107 to schedule a tax assistance appointment at FROM or any other locations.

FROM Income Tax Assistance is held on Tuesdays (by appointments only) from February – April. Morning, afternoon, and evening appointments are available.

What to Expect During my Appointment

Due to Covid-19, masks will be required by both volunteer tax preparers and those having their taxes done, temperatures may be taken upon arrival, and appointments will be limited to two people.

During your appointment you will meet with the volunteer tax preparer and go over your tax form line by line.  You will need to bring all the items below as they do like to do the entire return in one appointment.

All the returns are imputed into the computer during the appointment so the preparer will be asking you questions as you go through the form.

When you leave your appointment, you will know how much to expect for a refund or payment.

Items to bring to your appointment
  • Current photo ID for every adult in your household
  • Social Security card for every family member
  • 1099 forms and any other proof of income
  • All 1095 forms (health insurance statements)
  • SSI letter
  • All tax documents from the year before
  • Last year’s heating bills (11/2018-11/2019)
  • Proof of rent or mortgage
  • Name and address of all landlords
  • Childcare provider, name, address and federal identification number
